I’ve been thinking about something my sister said to me.
“People will go to Broadway but you love it”
Hell yeah, I love musicals
I was blessed (read: privileged) to grow up in a household that appreciated music/the arts in general as much as my family did. There was constantly music playing (or being sung), movies being watched, books being read, etc.
I’m not saying that we all liked the same genres/expressions of art; on the contrary, we all had vastly different preferences.
But being able to grow up, knowing that the arts were an essential part of being human, was a gift.
Back to musicals
I love them. With a passion.
I’ve literally gone around the house doing chores while singing my way through an entire musical (singing all the parts of course).
There’s a whole other level of escapism and suspension of disbelief for musicals.
Sure, let’s just break out into song to work our way through feelings.
Dance break to resolve conflicts? Yeah, go for it.
Why not a power ballad to be dramatic about whatever transition I’m currently going through?
That would definitely be frowned upon irl.
But musicals are magical. They’re a labor of love from so many moving parts.
A musical is a culmination of talents coming together to perform something that will never be exactly the same every time.
There’s the costumes, the score, the people performing, the pit orchestra, the lighting, the sound production, the set design, and even the audience themselves. And that’s not even everything that goes into the production.
tl;dr: I guess this is just a small love letter to musicals. They tell so many stories, create musical motifs that burn themselves onto my heart and brain, and produce memories that I know won’t compare to anything else.
